Onkyo Unveils A High-Performance THX® Certified Select™ AV Receiver and Flexible 3D Audio-Ready Home Cinema Packages

Press Release dated: 26 Mar 2019

OSAKA, JAPAN. Onkyo is continuing its mission to make home entertainment more immersive and ever more adaptable with the launch of three new products announced today. They comprise the THX Select certified 7.2-ch TX-NR696 Network A/V Receiver, the 5.1.2-ch HT-S5915 Home Cinema Package, and the 5.1-ch HT-S3910 Home Cinema Package - all supporting Dolby Atmos® and DTS:X® soundtracks to wrap viewers in a seamless 3D sound environment.

TX-NR696 7.2-Ch Network A/V Receiver

Developing 175 W/Ch (6 ohms, 1kHz, 10% THD, 1-ch driven), the TX-NR696 benefits from noise reduction measures such as a refined HDMI® board, isolated network board, and enhanced amplification system featuring a strengthened power supply. It also boasts a quad-core SoC (System on a Chip) enabling high-speed 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO*1 Wi-Fi® and evolved network functionalities. In addition, 3D sound virtualisation technologies from Dolby® and DTS®, simplified multi-room audio distribution, 4K HDR support, and a host of proprietary functions underline this new AVR’s compelling price-to-performance advantage. The TX-NR696 is THX Select certified having met and exceeded 2,000 stringent bench-tests in 75 categories covering 14,000 data points, satisfying THX® sound-quality requirements for achieving cinema-reference volume in rooms where the viewing position is about 3.5 m from the screen.

The TX-NR696 can play Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats through 5.2.2 channels as well as legacy soundtracks remapped for 3D audio playback through height speakers using Dolby Surround® or DTS® Neural:X upmixers. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer*2 enables a more immersive listening experience with Dolby formats, creating a virtual surround and height effect from an existing speaker system without having to provide additional new surround or height speakers. DTS Virtual:X™*2, also enables a more immersive listening experience from any stereo or multichannel content without the need for additional surround or height speakers, to bridge the gap between the content and the end consumers’ speaker configuration.

The sheer speed, force and resolution required for thrilling surround-sound are delivered by Onkyo’s suite of Dynamic Audio Amplification technologies. These include a custom-made High-Current, Low-Noise Power Transformer, custom-designed capacitors and discrete non-phase-shift amp topology. As well as improving speaker control, high current flows deliver stable power delivery into difficult 4 ohm speaker loads. Several design enhancements preserve signal purity and improve S/N (Signal to Noise) performance. The HDMI board has shortened signal-paths and large, effective grounding paths to limit noise. The SoC board is isolated from analogue audio signals and a more robust power supply circuit assists with providing driving power. And for the Front L/R and Centre channels, a second power transistor has been added to the amplifier output stages, doubling current-handling capabilities. Whether listening to vinyl via the built-in phono equaliser or streaming Hi-Res Audio, these upgrades are both heard and felt as improved sound separation and localisation, a bigger soundstage, and punchier bass.

The TX-NR696 features Next Generation Network Audio, a versatile, multi-service platform that integrates Amazon Music*3, Spotify®*3, TIDAL*3, Deezer*3, and TuneIn*3 services, all shareable around the home via Works with Sonos, Chromecast built-in*4, AirPlay 2, DTS Play-Fi®, and FlareConnect™*5. As a Works with Sonos certified product, the TX-NR696 can easily be integrated into a Sonos Home Sound System by pairing it with a Sonos Connect*6, with control coming courtesy of the Sonos app*7. Multi-room capabilities also extend to Chromecast built-in, enabling users to stream music from smartphones, tablets, laptops, and PCs from popular apps with just a tap or click. Voice control is available when used in conjunction with a Google Assistant enabled device, such as Onkyo Smart Speaker G3 or Google Home. Apple AirPlay 2 lets users stream music or podcasts from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac to speakers throughout the house, all in perfect sync.

The TX-NR696 offers 384 kHz/32-bit multichannel signal D/A (Digital to Analogue) conversion optimised by VLSC™ (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) ‘pulse noise’ removal technology on the Front L/R channels. Top quality processing means that Hi-Res Audio is presented at its very best, with DSD supported up to 11.2 MHz*8 and FLAC, WAV [RIFF], AIFF, and ALAC up to 192 kHz/24-bit*9. Direct Mode provides a sound that’s faithful to the source by preserving the signal’s original integrity, while Pure Audio Mode goes a step further by powering-down non-essential circuits during playback, to further minimise noise.

A major highlight is the new Zone 2/Zone B line-out, supported by a Zone 2 DAC. When set to Zone 2 mode and connected to a compatible audio component, the same (or different) D/A sources (including SPDIF*10 and HDMI*10) can be played in either (or both) rooms at the same time. Zone B mode is also an ideal way of adding a a compatible transmitter so that the same main-room sound is simultaneously available to wireless headphones, ideal for watching movies late at night or when viewing the TV from a distance. The terminals also double as a Front L/R channel pre-out, enabling connection of an external power amp if desired.

The receiver supports the use of a 5.2-ch layout in the Main zone with two channels allocated to drive speakers in another room. Analogue, NET, Bluetooth®, SPDIF*10, and HDMI*10 audio can be shared to either (or both) zones simultaneously without the need for a separate external amplifier. An HDMI Sub/Zone 2 output can send signals from HDMI inputs 1 - 3 to a secondary display or projector, and is additional to the Main HDMI output (with ARC) and seven HDMI inputs (one front). All HDMIs are HDCP 2.2-compliant and support 4K/60p, BT.2020, and 4:4:4/24-bit video pass-through. Video with High Dynamic Range in HDR10, HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma), or Dolby Vision™ formats is passed through to compatible displays. Super Resolution 4K upscaling technology for HD sources is also provided.

In one of many firsts for Onkyo, a new Stereo Assign Mode can switch playback from the Front L/R speakers to the Height (or Surround/Surround Back depending on configuration) speakers for ambient background listening. A DSP-controlled Vocal Enhancer function, which is accessed via remote keys or front-panel controls, offers five-step adjustment of vocal frequencies to alleviate the common problem of inaudible dialogue while watching a movie or other video content. A new one-touch volume memory preset allows users to to save the desired start-up volume for different sources simply by holding down a front-panel input key for a few seconds. Audio received via Bluetooth wireless technology is enhanced by Advanced Music Optimizer™, which improves compressed audio playback quality. Speaker level calibration is made simple thanks to the AccuEQ set-up system. It automatically detects your speaker sizes and their distance from a measurement position, then sets output levels, distances, subwoofer crossover frequency, as well as EQ-ing all the speakers (including the subwoofer). AccuReflex™ optimises 3D audio heard through Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers by eliminating unwanted phase-shifts.

HT-S5915 and HT-S3910 Home Cinema Packages

The 5.1-ch HT-S3910 Home Cinema Package is a versatile and flexible system supporting home cinema surround sound via 5.1 channel or 3.1.2 channel operation, and includes a 155W/Ch (6 ohms, 1kHz, 10% THD, 1-ch driven) A/V receiver and full-range speaker system including a passive subwoofer. The step-up HT-S5915 package, meanwhile, offers a 5.1.2-ch configuration with 160W/Ch (6 ohms, 1kHz, 10% THD, 1-ch driven). It ships with 2-Way Front L/R speakers (includes Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers), centre speaker, full-range surrounds and a 90W active subwoofer (with a 20cm driver).

Movie fans can experience 3D surround sound from legacy formats using Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X modes with a 3.1.2-ch (HT-S3910) or 5.2.2-ch (HT-S5915) layout. A highly immersive virtualised surround sound listening experience can be enjoyed - without surround or height speakers connected - thanks to Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer and DTS Virtual:X. Both receivers have four HDMI inputs and one output with support for 4K/60p, HDR, 4:4:4/24-bit, BT.2020, and HDCP 2.2 standards. The GUI (Graphic User Interface) over HDMI includes a media input/output display allowing users to conveniently view useful media playback information, such as the HDR format of content or the audio codec being used, while actually watching/listening to it.

Each package produces dynamic sound from discrete high-current analogue amps courtesy of a High-Current, Low-Noise Power Transformer and audio-grade capacitors, and the systems are rated to drive 4 ohm speakers. The HT-S5915 also gains AccuEQ and AccuReflex™ technologies for quick and accurate room-acoustic calibration.

The home theatre systems sport Onkyo’s new Vocal Enhancer feature as well as Zone B line-out for sharing the same main-room source to a compatible audio system or a transmitter for wireless headphones. Both are also equipped with Bluetooth wireless technology, Advanced Music Optimizer, a powered USB port for dongles, coaxial/optical digital audio inputs, and three analogue RCA inputs. Feature-packed, affordable, and easy to set up and enjoy, both these packages represent a stress-free path to immersive 3D sound while making all your entertainment sources more enjoyable, thanks to their rich, hi-fi grade sound quality.
