DAB+ is based on the original DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) standard, but uses the more efficient MP4 or AAC+ codec, whereas DAB uses the older MP2 format. This allows equivalent or better subjective audio quality to be broadcast at lower bit rates, thereby allowing more stations to be added to a “multiplex”—meaning greater listening choice for the consumer. Most countries offering DAB now provide a DAB+ broadcasting service.
